How to Set Limit Orders on a DEX (2026): Buy the Dip and Take Profit Automatically
A step-by-step guide to limit, stop and recurring orders for DEX tokens on Defined: set a trigger by price or percentage, drag it on the chart, and manage open orders across Solana and EVM chains.

Most decentralized exchanges are automated market makers, not order books, so there is no native way to leave a resting order at a price. You either watch the chart and press buy at the right moment, or you use a terminal that watches it for you. Defined does the latter: you set a trigger price, and when the market reaches it Defined submits the swap on the DEX, on Solana or any supported EVM chain. This guide covers limit, stop and recurring orders, how triggers work, and how to manage them.
Order types
- Market: trade now at the current price.
- Limit: buy at or below a price, or sell at or above a price. Buy the dip, take profit on the way up.
- Stop: buy when the price rises to a level, or sell when it falls to one. A stop-loss is a sell stop below your entry; a breakout buy is a buy stop above resistance.
- Recurring: split a total amount into scheduled buys or sells over time. A simple dollar-cost average in or out.
All of these work on Solana, Ethereum, Base, BNB Chain and Robinhood, and they are charged like any spot trade: 0.50% of the trade when it fills, with a $0.25 minimum. Nothing is charged for placing or cancelling an order.
Step 1: Open the token
Search for the token or open it from trending, a watchlist or a tracked trader's activity. The trade form sits next to the chart.
Step 2: Choose the order type
Switch the form from Market to Limit or Stop (or Recurring for scheduled orders).
Step 3: Set the trigger
A limit or stop trigger can be set two ways:
- As a price: enter the exact price per token. Defined also shows the market cap that price implies, which is often the easier number to reason about on a low-priced token.
- As a percentage: enter a percentage from the current price, for example 20% below for a buy limit or 50% above for a sell limit. The trigger price is calculated for you from the live price when you place the order.
Defined validates the direction: a buy limit must be below the current price, a sell limit above it, a buy stop above and a sell stop below. If you want to buy above the current price, that is a stop, not a limit, and the form will tell you.
Step 4: Set the amount and place the order
Enter the amount, review the fee and the estimated receive amount, and place the order. Your balance for the order is reserved from your USDC cash (for buys) or the token position (for sells).
Step 5: Manage it on the chart
Open orders appear as horizontal lines on the chart, with buy limits and sell limits labelled at their trigger prices. Drag a line to move the trigger to a new level; the order is replaced at the new price. Price alerts can be dragged the same way, so you can keep an alert a little before your order as an early warning.
The Orders panel lists every open, filled and cancelled order with its trigger, size and status. Cancel from there or from the chart. If a sell leaves too little of the token to cover a resting sell order, Defined cancels that order and tells you.
Recurring orders
Choose Recurring, set the total amount, the number of orders and the interval, and Defined submits each slice on schedule. You can pause and resume a recurring order, and cancelling stops future slices while leaving the ones already submitted alone.
How triggers execute
Defined watches the live price and submits the swap when the trigger is reached. The fill happens at the DEX's price at that moment with your slippage setting, so in a fast market a limit can fill slightly better or worse than the trigger, and a stop in a crash can fill below it, exactly as a stop-market does anywhere. Set slippage per chain in settings. If a trade from the form fails because the price moved past your slippage, the form offers a one-tap retry at a higher slippage.
Tips
- Use percentages for tokens you do not want to price precisely, and prices when you are targeting a level on the chart.
- Keep a price alert a few percent before a stop so you can decide whether to let it run.
- Layer buy limits at several levels rather than one; a recurring order does the same over time instead of over price.
- Limit and stop orders are available in the iOS and Android apps too, and a filled limit order sends a push notification.
FAQ
Can you place limit orders on a DEX?
Not natively on an automated market maker. A terminal such as Defined watches the price and submits the swap when your trigger is hit, which works on any DEX pool on Solana and EVM chains.
Does Defined charge for placing a limit order?
No. You pay the normal spot fee, 0.50% with a $0.25 minimum, only when the order fills.
What is the difference between a limit and a stop order?
A limit buys below or sells above the current price. A stop buys above or sells below it. A stop-loss is a sell stop; a breakout entry is a buy stop.
Can I set a take-profit and a stop-loss at the same time?
Yes. Place a sell limit above the price for the take-profit and a sell stop below it for the stop-loss on the same position.
Can I move an order without cancelling it?
Yes. Drag the order's line on the chart to a new level and Defined replaces it at the new trigger.
